Saskatoon's Sheepdogs win Rolling Stone contest

After a whirlwind seven months, The Sheepdogs officially get to see their faces on the cover of the Rolling Stone. The Saskatoon rock band was revealed as the winner of the Rolling Stone Choose the Cover contest on Monday over singer/songwriter Lelia Broussard.
“It’s fantastic, it’s surreal. It has been such a long time so it’s great to be over, but it’s pretty awesome man, it’s just wonderful,” lead singer Ewan Currie said Monday from New York.
The official announcement wasn’t to come until Monday evening when a billboard featuring the cover was unveiled in Times Square, but it was hard to keep the results under wraps. Early Monday afternoon, Twitter users were already happily relaying the news to followers with comments like “so proud” and “well deserved.”
“My phone has been vibrating in my pocket non-stop,” Currie said. The band had to keep their win a secret for several days before the official announcement. “Not we can get the word out and it feels pretty damn good.”
The contest began in February with 16 unsigned bands vying for the cover. The Sheepdogs were the only Canadians. The next six months included trips to New York and a slot at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and countless dates across Canada.
In addition to gracing the Aug. 18 edition of Rolling Stone (on newsstands Aug. 5), the band also gets a recording contract with Atlantic Records. Currie said he already has 50 potential songs for the band’s next record. Though he would go into the studio “tomorrow” if he could The Sheepdogs have a heavy tour schedule ahead and probably won’t go in to record until January.
