I don't know how I feel about this yet, do I feel justice has been served? No. Did the prosecution team prove that Casey was guilty? I think there was some doubt left and that is why she wasn't convicted. There was a ton of evidence that suggested that she was the one who committed this heinous crime and common sense would suggest that she is guilty. But the prosecution could not build it's case without a doubt. I think we all can agree that she is the one guilty of this crime but without closing the door of doubt, the prosecution could not finish it's job. All of the prosecution was built around circumstantial evidence, it all obviously made a very good case and most of us know she did it but it was still just that...... circumstantial.
The defense team threw up a lot of different scenarios about what could have happened, from Dad did it, to brother, to babysitter and much more. This introduced doubt into the minds of the jurors and obviously something stuck in their minds, enough so that she was found not guilty.
Now the sad thing is that once found guilty in the U.S., the prosecution cannot appeal the case. Meaning that she will never go to court again for this list of charges. Will other charges be brought against her in the future? Maybe, but it will not be for first or second degree murder. I do not know enough about the law regrading a lesser charge of manslaughter but I think that would not be able to go forward either. I will leave it to the powers that be to see if other charges could be brought forward under the constitution and leave it with this. Justice was not done, the murderer of this little child is free and will never be brought to justice under the court of law.
This is the way that these cases go and as hard as it is to accept, we have to do just that. Knowing that Casey now has to live out her life with everyone knowing that everyone believes that she is guilty of all charges but got off lucky. Plus she will have to live with the guilt that comes along with this horrendous crime.
